GLOSSARY: BASS MANAGEMENT

In a satellite / subwoofer loudspeaker system, the higher frequencies go to each "satellite" speaker around the room, such as LEFT, CENTER, RIGHT, LEFT SURROUND, and RIGHT SURROUND. The lower, or Bass frequencies for EACH of the channels gets "steered" through a BASS MANAGEMENT circuit where it winds up going to the subwoofer only. Therefore if you are listening to a jazz performance where there is a string bass player playing in the RIGHT FRONT channel, and your subwoofer is placed towards the left corner of the room, the BASS MANAGEMENT circuit will allow the correct frequencies to come out of each speaker, and then the signals will combine through the mechanism of your hearing, and the music will sound correct -- as if the bass player is playing at the RIGHT FRONT of the room.

Most modern home theater systems (5.1 receivers and control centers) contain bass management systems WITH THE NOTABLE EXCEPTION of the latest DVD-A (DVD-Audio) players. We have found that even when used with units that have bass management circuitry, which is almost always implemented in the digital domain, that our analog units provide a level of clarity that is stunning in comparison. The BMC 5.1-MINI and LFE-4 Bass Management systems are similar in concept and function except the BMC 5.1-MINI is the unbalanced version using RCA connectors and the LFE-4 is the Balanced version using balanced 3-pin type (sometimes called XLR or A3) connectors. Depending upon your connection scheme, either is suitable for the finest audiophile home system OR professional or semi-professional critical monitoring situations. If you want to hear it at home the way the professionals hear it in the studio, you have virtually no other choice!
