The result of M&K's latest work in the psychoacoustics of multichannel digital sound, the new S-125 combines great musicality with a new level of dynamic and exciting performance, all optimized for the latest multichannel technology. Designed for playback of 5.1 channel discrete digital program sources, the S-125 is a true reference speaker for digital multichannel sound.
PHASE-FOCUSED CROSSOVER
The razor-sharp stereo imaging of the S-125 is due in great part to its Phase-Focused crossover, which optimizes not just for on-axis response but to give a very smooth response over a wide listening window. While other crossover designs consider just frequency response on one axis, we consider the speaker's response at various angles in both the vertical and horizontal planes, to optimize its three-dimensional response. This uniquely sophisticated crossover is critically tuned through both psychoacoustic listening analysis and complex computer analysis giving you much more than just good on-axis response. You hear a very smooth response over a wide listening window (very important for home theater), and you also hear a more focused and coherent sound on axis!
The S-125's crossover provides a choice of two different tonal characteristics to match room acoustics, a listener's preference, or (for home theater), a better timbre-match with non-M&K speakers. The "NORMAL" characteristic gives M&K's "Q-curve" response, which has an extremely musical tonal balance. For film playback this additionally compensates for the differences in tonal balance heard between the loud reference playback levels of film dubbing stages and the moderate levels typical of a home theater. The alternative "BRIGHT MIDRANGE TIMBRE" characteristic is for absorptive room environments, speaker placement on room surfaces, and for when the S-125 is used as a surround channel speaker aimed away from the listening area. Users can select these characteristics and the high-pass filter by choosing the appropriate two (of a total of four) five-way gold binding post inputs on the S-125's back.
DESIGNED FOR 5.1 CHANNEL SYSTEMS
Using the same drivers (and available shielded or unshielded) as M&K's S-1C, S-100B, and S-85, the S-125 achieves an excellent timbre match with any of these models. Its size and design, and especially its integral High-Pass filter, make the S-125 ideal for the most advanced home theaters!
NON-PARALLEL WALL CABINET DESIGN
Designed in mirror-imaged pairs (the center-channel is separate), the front baffle of the S-125 is angled, giving an automatic toe-in. For front channels, this improves stereo imaging. When the S-125 is used in the surround channels, this angle can help to increase the diffuse nature of the surround channel by reflecting sound off the side or rear walls.
Further significant sonic improvement comes from the fact that the small left and right cabinet side walls are also non-parallel, meaning that the only parallel surfaces of the cabinet are its top and bottom.
To solve tricky installation problems, integral mounting hardware for Omnimount brackets (a single 3/8", as well as two 1/4" - 20s) is found on the back baffle. The same mounting hardware also mounts the S-125 to the new M&K LDM pedestal and ST speaker stands.
Cabinet dimensions are 18.5" H x 6.25" W x 8.25" D. Weight is 17 lbs.
