With significant improvements over its predecessor S-80 (ranked #2 out of 18 center channels by Sound & Image magazine), the
S-85C applies M&K's latest work in optimizing the real-world performance of center channel speakers. Incorporating highly useful new features, it has both the dynamic range needed for superior center channel performance and a unique ability to emulate the tonal balance of non-M&K speakers used in the left and right front channels.

NEW PHASE-FOCUSED CROSSOVER WITH HIGH-PASS FILTER

Horizontal center channel speakers are prone to irregular response and lobing (large off-axis dips in response) in the horizontal plane, which spoils the sound for listeners not directly in front of the speaker. M&K's Phase-Focused crossover design and driver configuration (one woofer and one tweeter) work to give unprecedented wide and smooth horizontal dispersion optimizing imaging, sound quality, and dialog intelligibility throughout the room.

The S-85C's brand-new crossover provides a choice of two different tonal characteristics (including our "Q-curve") to match either a room's acoustical environment, a listener's preference, or for home theater, to achieve a better timbre-match with non-M&K speakers. The "NORMAL" characteristic gives M&K's "Q-curve" response, for an extremely musical tonal balance. In film playback this compensates for the differences in tonal balance heard between the loud reference playback levels of film dubbing stages and the moderate levels typical of a home theater. The "BRIGHT MIDRANGE TIMBRE" characteristic is for "dead" room environments and placement on top of projection televisions.

FERROMAGNETIC SHIELDING SYSTEM

Like most other magnetically shielded speakers, the S-85C drivers have dual magnets. The brand-new 5 1/4" woofer driver even adds an additional shielding can. But for today's highly sensitive direct-view and rear-projection monitors, that may not be enough. Therefore, the S-85C is M&K's first speaker to use our new Ferromagnetic Shielding System, which utilizes a ferromagnetic shielding plate inside the cabinet to prevent even the slightest amount of magnetic field from distorting the picture when the S-85C sits on top of or close to a television set.

TIMBRE-MATCHED TO OTHER M&K SATELLITES

Using the same drivers as M&K's S-1C, S-100B, S-125, and SS-150 satellites, the S-85C achieves an excellent timbre match for seamless sound when used in combination with any of these other M&K models.

CABINET

The S-85C cabinet has an angled front baffle that aims the speaker drivers more directly at listeners when the speaker is above the listening position (such as on top of a rear projection set) or when it sits below the listening position (on a low stand, shelf, or below a front projection screen). The angle was carefully calculated to give the best sound quality for a wide range of installation conditions.

Dimensions are 6.25" H x 10.5" W x 8.25" D. Weight is 9 lbs.

To further facilitate installation and to solve tricky installation problems, integral mounting hardware for Omnimount brackets (3/8") is located on the back baffle. The same mounting hardware also mounts the S-85C to the new M&K ST series speaker stands and mounting brackets.
