MASSIVE 12 GAUGE STEEL BAFFLE
The SW-85's high level of performance starts with its baffle and mounting brackets. In diametric opposition to the typical in-wall speaker's flimsy plastic baffle, the SW-85 baffle is made of 12 gauge steel, for a truly rigid platform with significantly superior sonics.
This very thick baffle then mounts to the wall using two 13 gauge steel U-channel rails that run nearly the full vertical height of the baffle. The entire assembly has the strength to actually flatten and reinforce the drywall rigidly clamped between the steel baffle and steel mounting rails! M&K's mounting scheme gives you a remarkably quick and easy installation, as you need only guide the already assembled package into the wall cutout and tighten four screws to securely mount the speaker in place.

FRAMELESS MAGNETIC GRILLE DESIGN
You know the typical look of an in-wall speaker: a cheap rectangular plastic frame surrounding a metal grille. Many of them look the same because they have literally come from the same mold in a plant somewhere in the Far East! But not the U.S.-made SW-85. Its frameless look is a designer's delight. Its perforated metal grille is white powder coated over a zinc-fortified epoxy-base, and it fastens to the steel baffle with six custom-magnetized seven-pole magnets—eliminating the need for an unattractive frame—and securing the grille with more than enough strength for ceiling mounts. Simply paint the grille with the same paint as the surrounding wall for a perfect match—without the unwanted additional element of the plastic frame appearing on the wall.
PHASE-FOCUSED CROSSOVER &
SAME DRIVERS AS REFERENCE S-150THX
Look at most in-wall speakers, and you'll see an inexpensive set of drivers with a simple crossover, all bearing little resemblance to the components of a high quality speaker. Look at the SW-85, and you'll see the exact same custom-built drivers and the exact same type of distortionless crossover used on M&K's highest-performance speakers.
The SW-85 uses the same woofer and tweeter found in M&K's reference-standard S-150THX, as well as M&K's exclusive Phase-Focused crossover. Unlike other in-wall speakers, this crossover provides remarkably even coverage of sound in both the horizontal and vertical planes—without the lobing and hot spots of lesser speakers. This means superior imaging and integration of sound, whether the speaker is used in a stereo or a 5.1 multichannel surround system. The crossover optimizes sound quality and imaging when the speaker is located above listeners' ears, so that you will get ideal sound when the speaker is mounted high on a wall near the ceiling.
REMOTE SWITCHING OF TONAL BALANCE FOR HOME THEATER OR MUSIC
Multiple inputs allow you to remotely switch between two choices of tonal balances when a three or four-conductor wire is used. One choice gives you a maximum output home theater position that matches the S-150THX speaker, and the other gives you a lower-level music listening position. You can also remotely select an optional built-in 80 Hz high-pass filter for systems without separate electronic high-pass filters that need to produce high SPL with high-powered amplifiers. Either choice can also be hard-wired at the time of installation.
For use as a surround channel speaker (or as a front channel), the SW-85 is timbre-matched to all M&K Satellites, including the S-5000THX, S-150THX, SS-150THX, S-1C, S-100B, S-125, S-85, and Bookshelf-75.
PRECONSTRUCTION BRACKET KIT AVAILABLE
For new construction, the SPRE-85 preconstruction bracket kit (not needed for installation in existing walls) allows mounting anywhere between wall studs, using a rectangular frame that attaches to straps mounted to the wall studs.
